Cranial Osteopathy

What is Cranial Osteopathy?

Cranial OsteopathyCranial osteopaths are trained to feel a very subtle, rhythmical shape change that is present in all body tissues, which we call “involuntary motion”

It is involuntary motion the ensures that the body’s tissues have a sufficient perfusion of fluid, to guarantee healthy functioning.

Major physical or emotional shocks or illness can impede proper functioning of involuntary motion. Also everyday stresses and strains, e.g. poor posture, can accumulate over time in the body’s tissues to a degree that involuntary motion is unable to provide full fluid perfusion. Discomfort, pain or disease are the consequences of poor fluid perfusion of tissue.

Cranial osteopaths use gentle pressure and holds on various parts of the body to encourage the release of stresses and strains, and assist optimal functioning of involuntary motion.

It is particularly useful where more robust methods of manual therapy are not indicated,e.g. Whiplash injuries, post-surgical, the treatment of children or the frail.

It is also beneficial for

 *Sporting injuries

 *Chronic back and neck pain

 *Arthritis

 *Headaches/Migraines

 *Asthma

 *Fatique

Cranial Osteopathy is particularly useful in the treatment of new born babies and children.

Many babies are born with odd shaped heads as a result of stresses in a normal delivery. In the first few days, the head can usually be seen to gradually lose the extreme moulded shape, as the baby suckles, cries and yawns. However, this moulding process is often incomplete, especially if the birth has been difficult. As a result, the baby may have to live with some uncomfortable stresses within its head and body, it is possible that cranial osteopathy will relieve these stresses.

Cranial Osteopaths also consider that mechanical stresses on the body can be an important factor in cases of developmental delay such as delayed speech, educational difficulties and problems with coordination and physical development that have now particular medical diagnosis. Such children often make better progress once osteopathic treatment has been started.
